To Market… To Market 1
Who doesn’t love a good market??? For me, markets are a paradise where you can source a brilliant myriad of nic nacs, clothes, accessories, homewares and gifts. There are a lot of handcrafted items which means you can find truly unique items rather than the boring mass stock of major retailers. A trip to a market can be an all day event, often there’s local entertainment, food stalls with exotic and standard fare, lots of samples and goodies to try and the thrill of finding and obscure treasure or gift is unmatched. There are great markets located throughout Australia and they provide a good weekend activity for tourists, visitors and locals. Over the week, I’m going to review a few of the more popular markets throughout Australia.
Starting in NSW
Right in the centre of Sydney is the Bohemian and trendy Paddington Market. In my opinion, this is one of the better markets in central Sydney with a nice balance of new and used items, handicrafts, gifts, clothes, accessories, local produce and homewares. Perhaps by virtue of its trendy location, it also tends to be one of the more expensive markets. Although, compared to local Oxford St shops, the prices are still market bargains and it is filled with quality stalls and exotic items. Paddington Markets has been the breeding ground for a lot of Sydney based designers. Fashion labels such as Third Millenium, Von Troska, Pablo Nevada, Lisa Ho and Bracewell all got their start selling at Paddington Markets. The best part about Paddington Markets if the fun and eccentric vibe. For local Sydneysiders, it’s a great place to stroll about with friends as there is always a good rotation of stalls, sellers, arts and crafts. For tourists, Paddington Markets offers a great opportunity to experience a more bohemian side of the city and pick up some local art, crafts and creations. You can chat directly with the artist and find some unique souvenirs rather than the traditional tacky stuff retailed throughout the CBD stores.
Getting There:
Getting to Paddington Markets is a breeze. On a nice day, it’s a pleasant walk up Oxford Street from Taylor Square. You’ll also get a chance to see some of the boutique stores along the way. For the less athletic option, there are buses that run up Oxford St and stop at the markets from the city centre, Central or from Bondi. Here’s a helpful bus timetable. You can drive, but parking can be a nightmare. Parking restrictions or metered parking is rife and finding a parking spot can be a challenge. If you want to drive, be counting of a solid walk or hope to get lucky.
The markets are located at 395 Oxford St Paddington at the Uniting Church grounds.
Hours:
Paddington Markets are open every Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
