No need for these encyclopedias...
Here you go, a testament to the past; a past that's no longer convenient for people to belong to:
Selling a 30-volume Britannica Encyclopedia set for just $150.
The full set must cost over $1 000. When I was a kid, there'd be all these people selling these volumes from door-to-door. Educated, well-off families prided themselves on having encyclopedias, and I'd often go over to a friend's house to use his reference material.
Then the web arrived and blew everything wide open. We've got Wikipedia, which may not be as professional as the formal encyclopedia, but, in fact, is a fantastic tool for getting quick, basic knowledge on a subject.
Wikipedia is full of problems, it's true. But when you factor in the price -free- compared to the Britannica, which runs at a cool G, the difference in quality is easily forgotten.
Added to this, is the ability of Wikipedia to be dynamic. It can change in a split second, and articles are often updated with current events. It's a wonderful resource and one that I'm thankful to be able to use.
Sadly, though, come the days of selling your 30-volume encyclopedia for $150.
